Mission Statement
The purpose of this organization shall be to support and enhance the operations and activities of the Merrill J. Mattes Research Library, a public research library established by the Oregon-California Trails Association and to support and enhance the operations and activities of the National Frontier Trails Museum, an institution owned and maintained by the City of Independence.
Vision Statement
This organization is a thriving community of learners, historians, educators, and adventurers inspired by the history of north American westward expansion and engaged in preserving the heritage of all the peoples and cultures involved in this era.
Together, we can help preserve history and share the legacy of the pioneers with future generations.
The Merrill J. Mattes Research Library
The library is home to the nation’s largest public collection of rare books, maps, documents, and diaries related to the historic trails.
Step into the lives of pioneers through their trail diaries — filled with hope, hardship, and determination. Help us protect these powerful stories that keep their legacy alive.
